Legislative Internships

In order to major in Political Science, you must fulfill our capstone requirement during your senior year. One way to do this is by taking POLS 402, Legislative Internships.

These are the description and the applications of the two internships that we offer (available in PDF format).

Community Internships

POLS 403: These internships involve the student working 8-10 hours per week in some kind of practicum setting, with a local non government organization (NGO) community group or government office, to gain an understanding of local political practices and activities. (3 credits)

  • Consent of either Professor Rohter or Professor Nitz is required to enroll. Recommended: POLS 390 (Methodology).
  • Before registering, the student must: (1) Locate a site for the internship, and gain the approval of a responsible staff person in the organization who will supervise their day-to-day activities; (2) find a faculty member to advise and supervise the selective reading and paper writing requirements that define the academic component of the practicum. Professor Nitz and Professor Rohter can assist you with advice about these requirements.

Community action/field work

POLS 402: Students will be placed with a state legislator and will work FULL TIME in her/his office to gain an understanding of Hawai`i state politics and to develop skills in policy analysis, organizational practices, and community leaderships. Offered each spring. (15 credits)
